This course surveys movements in the history of design from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries. Graphic design is situated within the contexts of architecture, media, and other design disciplines. The course is organized chronologically and examines stylistic, national, and international trends. A main focus is the impact of ideology on design and the way design generates or reinforces social, political, and cultural values in particular places and times.
