English poetry and prose of the seventeenth century. Topics may include Stuart absolutism, Puritan dissent, the English Civil War, print culture, scientific discovery, and the Atlantic world. Literary forms, genres, and movements may include metaphysical poetry, cavalier poetry, the court masque, the devotional lyric, life writing, and early prose fiction. Authors may include Jonson, Donne, Herbert, Marvell, Traherne, Cavendish, Behn, and Milton.
