A study focusing largely on the comedies and histories written during the first part of Shakespeare’s career to 1603. Topics may include the formation of professional acting companies and the construction of permanent theaters, patronage of and hostility towards players and plays, and religious and political controversies of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign.
