A study in the literatures and cultures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century United States (approximately 1880-1930). Topics may include modernization, technological change, consumer culture, wealth consolidation, new understandings of identity (ethnicity, race, gender, class and sexuality), and literary movements such as Naturalism, Regionalism, Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance.
