French Material Culture & Civilization

This course offers an introduction to visual and material culture in the French-speaking world and how it has evolved from the Middle Ages to today and how artistic production was impacted by political and social structures of its era. We will explore developments in architecture, fine art, decorative arts, photography and film, and examine how the acquisition of colonial territories affected the production of art in France and around the world.
