The Uncanny in German-Speaking Culture

This interdisciplinary course focuses on the concept of the uncanny (Unheimlich) and its expression in the poetological and philosophical texts as well as in visual arts starting in the Romantic period. However, the uncanny elements, from ghosts and Doppelgänger to artificial life, lasted beyond Romanticism and are manifest across the literary movements of Realism, Modernism, and Postmodernism.
