This course explores why racial violence occurs, how it unfolds, who participates, what its consequences are, how it has changed over time, and who sanctions it. We will examine both legally sanctioned violence (death penalty) and extralegal violence (lynching) in the context of American history. The primary focus will be on the period from Reconstruction to the end of the Civil Rights Era.
