Sinners and Saints in American History
University of Alabama
CourseHY 415
This course studies the historical gap between Americans’ behavior and their moral and spiritual aspirations for themselves. How did this gap shape how Americans understood—or challenged—their society? What did it mean to be a good or bad person? What counted as sin at particular points in time? Why did Americans care about some kinds of wrongdoing more than about others? Writing proficiency is required for a passing grade in this course.
