This course provides a theoretical and practical background in the issues related to the development of reading and writing for second language, bilingual children, and adolescents. Among the units are the relationships between oral and written language, the role of oral language acquisition and phonemic awareness, the influence of sociocultural factors, developing advanced literacy through the language arts and literature, and the effect of specific language disabilities.
