Prisons, Punishment, and Power

This course examines the social and political forces that led to the steep rise in the prison population in the late 20th century. The course begins with an overview of sociological theories to frame our understanding of the prison system as a form of social control, and the criminal justice system as an expression of power. We also engage with contemporary readings that analyze how systems of power and control operate differently with regard to race, class, and gender.
