Adult Basic Education

The Adult Basic Education Certificate prepares educators to teach adults through introductory and elective coursework covering course design and assessment for adult education programs.

Adult ESL

Through a hands-on, practitioner-based approach, the Adult ESL Certificate supports individuals in acquiring the knowledge, practical skills, and abilities to teach English as a second language to adults from linguistically and culturally diverse populations.

Advanced Literacy Leadership

Building on the MN K-12 Reading License, the Advanced Literacy Leadership Certificate provides educational stakeholders a deeper understanding and broader repertoire of approaches to literacy teaching, coaching, and leadership based on the International Literacy Association's standards.

Advanced Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

The Advanced TEFL Certificate includes all coursework from the 8-credit initial TEFL Certificate as well as three linguistics courses. The initial TEFL courses must be completed on campus, while the remaining courses are offered online.

Anthropology

The anthropology major focuses on how we are human—looking broadly at our biological, cultural, and material selves—through a wide expression of engaging coursework from archaeology and material culture, to forensics and osteology. Students may choose to complete a concentration in either Anthropocene Studies or Applied Methodologies and Heritage Studies.

Applied Mathematics

Hamline's Applied Mathematics major provides the opportunity to build a diverse and comprehensive computational toolset, underpinned by strong theoretical understanding, which can be applied to a wide variety of questions in the natural and social sciences.

Autism Spectrum Disorders

Hamline's fully-online Autism Spectrum Disorders Certificate helps mainstream classroom teachers, parents, and other education or community professionals gain the skills and knowledge to better serve individuals identified on the autism spectrum through research-based strategies.

Biochemistry

The biochemistry major combines coursework in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics, culminating in a biology or chemistry seminar experience. The program is accredited by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Biology (BA)

The Biology Program starts with a two-course sequence that provides an overview of the field of biology while emphasizing core concepts that apply across all subdisciplines. BA students may choose a concentration in Genetics, Molecular, and Cellular Biology or Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.

Biology (BS)

Biology students preparing for graduate or professional schools are strongly encouraged to pursue the BS degree. BS students may choose a concentration in Genetics, Molecular, and Cellular Biology; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; or Public Health.

Business Administration

The Master of Business Administration focuses on topics that surface in everyday activities and long-term planning for all organizations, integrating these topics throughout the program with repeated emphasis from a variety of perspectives. It is designed to be completed in six semesters over 24 months.

Business Administration

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree program offers the essentials of business within a liberal arts framework, providing career preparation that sets you apart. Within the program, students can concentrate in accounting, business analytics, finance, management, or marketing.

Business Analytics

The Master of Science in Business Analytics provides students with the deep modeling and analytical skills to find insights in data to inform better decision making. The program consists of eight courses over eight consecutive eight-week sessions offered in a hybrid format.

Business Analytics for Managers

Hamline's Certificate in Business Analytics for Managers is designed primarily for those who will direct certain analysis activities to be done by others, needing to understand the analysis performed for their purposes, and who may also perform some analysis on data made available to them.

Business Finance

The Business Finance Certificate gives business professionals outside of accounting and finance a solid grounding in finance and the vocabulary, concepts, and basic tools used to understand the accounting and finance function in organizations.

Certified Public Manager

The Certified Public Manager program is a nationally accredited comprehensive management development program open to managers in federal, state, and local government as well as nonprofit agencies, aimed at improving the performance of public and nonprofit sector managers and organizations.

Chemistry (BA)

Chemistry students may choose to complete a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. The BA is intended for students wishing to attend graduate school in interdisciplinary or professional programs, establish a double major, obtain a secondary teaching license, or study abroad. American Chemical Society certification may be obtained.

Chemistry (BS)

For students desiring to work as a chemist in industry or attend graduate school, the BS pathway is appropriate and requires a research experience. Graduates are certified by the American Chemical Society.

Climate Literacy

The Climate Literacy Certificate deepens understanding of the political, social, ecological, and educational dimensions of climate change, with courses focused on pedagogy, science communication, environmental justice, and environmental systems.

Collaborative Leadership

Using a unique, problem-solving model, the Collaborative Leadership Certificate helps students influence others, understand team dynamics, and develop the ability to effectively lead others in environments with global business considerations.

Computational Data Science

Data science is the practice of connecting data to decision making. This interdisciplinary major is composed of six core courses in Computational Data Science, five courses from Mathematics and QMBE, a seminar, and four disciplinary courses that meet requirements from another major or minor.

Creative Writing

Hamline's Creative Writing major provides students a rigorous apprenticeship in the craft and process of creative writing. Across a rich and diverse curriculum, students acquire the tools to effectively execute their craft across multiple genres — fiction, nonfiction, poetry and digital storytelling.

Criminology and Criminal Justice

Hamline's criminology and criminal justice (CCJ) major provides students a social science approach to the study of crime. The required courses provide a foundation in crime and justice, and social research methods to understand criminal justice policy and interventions.

Data Analytics

The Certificate in Data Analytics is designed for the more hands-on technical audience who will perform data analysis activities and prepare results to be communicated to senior leaders.

Digital and Studio Art

The Digital + Studio Art major focuses on the development of creative, technical, formal and critical skills in digital, analog, and hybridized art forms. The major offers three concentrations: Fine Arts, Graphic + Interactive Design, and Media Arts.

Economics

Hamline's Economics major prepares students to examine and analyze issues of great societal importance: from consumer and corporate behavior to climate change policy, health care markets and more. Students may also choose an interdisciplinary concentration in behavioral economics or public policy.

Education

The Master of Arts in Education continues Hamline's tradition of relevant curriculum, outstanding faculty, and collaborative learning, building on students' knowledge and prior experience to link theory to practice. It is available in a fully online format or a hybrid format.

The Doctorate in Education uses a learning community structure and thematic curriculum that integrate the School of Education and Leadership conceptual frame: promoting equity in schools and society, building communities of teachers and learners, constructing knowledge, and practicing thoughtful inquiry and reflection.

Education

Students majoring in Education may choose from these concentrations: education studies, elementary, English as a second language (ESL), or special education. The education major core consists of 22 credits.

Educational Specialist

Hamline's post-master's Educational Specialist degree prepares students to implement impactful change, build relationships, and become culturally responsive and effective educator-leaders. It is offered in an Administrative Licensure Track and a Leadership for Equitable Innovation and Transformation track.

Education Co-Major

The Education Co-Major is intended for students seeking secondary licensure. Students seeking this major also complete a 'primary' major in the field most closely related to the license they are seeking. The co-major consists of 40 credits in education coursework.

Elevating Learning for Multilinguals

The Elevating Learning for Multilinguals Certificate provides knowledge and skills to transform instruction for multilingual learners of English, including second language acquisition theories, academic language support, and strategies for culturally responsive pedagogy.

English and Communication Studies

Students taking any major path through English and Communication Studies will develop core skills in communication across various media while defining and enhancing core skills in communication. Concentrations include Professional Communication and Cultural Rhetorics; Texts, Media, and Culture; and Writing, Editing, and Publishing.

Environmental and Climate Studies

The environmental and climate studies major looks at humans, the environment, and the natural, social, economic and environmental systems that weave them together. The major is ideal for students interested in sustainability, climate justice, environmental issues, and global solutions.

Environmental Education

The Environmental Education Certificate is a 'build your own' program combining introductory environmental education concepts, teaching methodology and best practices, issues and actions in environmental education, and a broad selection of content-specific courses.

Exercise Science (BA)

The Exercise Science major is designed to prepare students for professional studies in Physical Therapy, graduate studies in Exercise Science, entry into Athletic Training, or careers in the health and wellness area. For students interested in Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, or the wellness/fitness industry, the BA degree will prepare them well.

Exercise Science (BS)

For students planning to pursue graduate school in Exercise Physiology or Sports Science, or professional programs such as Physical Therapy, the BS degree will satisfy most prerequisites for those programs.

Forensic Science

The Forensic Science BS degree is designed to develop in-depth scientific knowledge and specialized application to criminal cases in hands-on forensic science study. The interdisciplinary program draws from biology, chemistry, and other physical sciences, with concentrations in Forensic Biology or Forensic Chemistry.

Global and International Studies

A student graduating with a global studies major will be able to analyze transnational and transcultural issues using field specific concepts, formulate a globally oriented research question, and work in a language other than their first language. Majors pursue a regional/cultural concentration and an off-campus study experience.

History

A major in history prepares and empowers students to use their knowledge of the past to analyze and engage problems and issues in the present. History majors develop research, analytic, and writing skills through gathering and evaluating evidence and analyzing a wide range of texts and sources.

Legal Studies

The department offers two options for majors: Legal Studies: Law and Society and Legal Studies with the Graduate Paralegal Certificate. Hamline's undergraduate program provides specific training in law and related professional skills within the context of a broader liberal arts education.

Literacy Education

The Master of Arts in Literacy Education provides a comprehensive, rigorous focus on literacy instruction and leadership, preparing teachers to become teacher leaders and advocates for literacy in their classrooms, schools, and communities.

Management and Leadership

The Master of Management and Leadership is a 32-credit program consisting of current core and elective courses offered in the MBA program and can be completed in 15 months. It is primarily intended for students with STEM undergraduate degrees and/or employed in STEM professions, not requiring the Accounting and Finance courses of the MBA program.

Management and Public Service

The PhD in Management and Public Service is a part-time cohort program designed for working professionals interested in the in-depth analysis of critical issues and leadership in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The program integrates theory and practice to foster critical thinking and scholarship.

Managing People in the Public Sector

This certificate goes beyond basic leadership training for an in-depth exploration of the unique challenges of managing people in the public sector, building awareness of one's own leadership capabilities to enact change within an organization and the greater public sphere.

Music Production

The Certificate in Music Production is a 16-credit, 6-course curriculum that is credit-bearing and available to all Hamline undergraduates, as well as non-degree seeking students. The certificate curriculum provides essential digital skills for careers in the changing music industry.

Music Production

The Major in Music Production prepares students for the diversity of opportunities in today's music industry. You will develop the skills to create, produce, and promote your own creative work, as well as collaborate with others and serve the greater arts community.

Natural Science and Environmental Education

Accredited by the North American Association for Environmental Education, the Master of Arts in Education: Natural Science and Environmental Education focuses on environmental literacy, teaching and learning, with an emphasis on systems, solutions, and sustainability. It is designed for both classroom teachers and non-formal educators.

Nature-based Early Learning

Grounded in equity and developmentally appropriate practice, the Nature-based Early Learning Certificate provides understanding of policy, practices, methods, and frameworks that impact nature-based learning in early childhood settings, focusing on children ages 3-8 and culminating in a professional synthesis project.

Nature-based Education

This 10-credit certificate offers practicing educators research-backed, immersive nature-based practices and pedagogical approaches to support all learners and create equitable learning environments, using nature as a context for teaching.

Neuroscience (BA)

Students completing a major in Neuroscience take a core set of introductory courses in psychology, biology, and chemistry, which prepares them to understand the biological basis for neural processing and higher cognitive functions. In upper level courses, students explore contemporary neuroscience theory and research.

Neuroscience (BS)

Students completing the BS degree take interdisciplinary supporting courses that will prepare them for graduate study in neuroscience, biological sciences and psychology, or for professional training in medicine, clinical psychology or other health professional areas.

Operational Change Management

This certificate establishes a solid foundation in understanding the dynamics of working with others and managing change, effectively deploying resources within an organization to implement changes that are sustained and aligning goals and objectives for common purpose.

Organizational Leadership

The Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Leadership in the Online Degree Completion program provides working adults with the knowledge and skills they need to serve as leaders in a variety of community settings. Organizational Leadership is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the human side of organizations and the application of leadership theory to practice.

Paralegal

Hamline's Graduate Paralegal Certificate, approved by the American Bar Association, prepares students to assist with substantive legal work under the supervision of an attorney or to work in a law-related setting such as corporate compliance, contracts administration, and the court system.

Performance, Production, and Community

The Department of Performance, Production, and Community is a place for makers. Our program provides opportunities for dancers, musicians, actors, composers, directors, designers, and producers to collaborate on dynamic works of art, grounded in theater and dance training and practice.

Philosophy

Students in philosophy develop the skills of critical analysis and communication that will enable them to develop and support their own answers to fundamental questions, and to draw connections to fundamental questions in other disciplines such as medical ethics, law, and education. A philosophy major consists of a minimum of 10 courses.

Physics (BA)

Physics students may choose to complete a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. The BA version is intended for students who wish to double major in other disciplines and can be done in three years for those who decide late.

Physics (BS)

The BS version of the major is intended for students planning to proceed to graduate work in either physics or engineering. BS students have the option to pursue a concentration in Innovation & Engineering or Energy & Environmental Science.

Political Science

Ten courses are required to complete a Political Science major. Students choose one of three thematic emphasis areas for elective coursework: public service, law and leadership; political change and advocacy; or regional and international security.

Proficiency in Chinese

The certificate is awarded to students who complete CHIN 3610, Chinese for the Professional, and pass with a grade of B- or better. In addition, students must complete a departmental proficiency test scheduled annually in the spring semester.

Proficiency in Spanish

Students who have begun the study of Spanish before coming to Hamline may enter the program at a level consistent with their ability. The certificate is awarded after taking SPAN 3900 and 3910 at Hamline and passing with a grade of B- or better.

Psychology

The major in psychology requires 14 courses. Students should confer with members of the department when planning a program for a career in psychology. Psychology majors have the option to complete an interdisciplinary concentration in behavioral economics or forensic psychology.

Public Administration

The Master of Public Administration gives working professionals the practical knowledge, tools, and skills they need to manage effectively and to meet the complex fiscal and economic challenges of the government and public service sectors.

Public Health

The Public Health Major prepares students for jobs or advanced study in a wide range of areas including health promotion, chronic disease prevention, infectious disease investigation, and health policy. Public Health offers two concentrations, one in Health Equity and one in Health Sciences.

Public Policy and Decision Making

This certificate provides an understanding of the public policy process and frameworks for its assessment, as well as the analysis skills to make data-driven decisions and communicate findings to non-technical audiences.

Public Sector Operations

Hamline's Public Sector Operations certificate builds enhanced skills in fiscal management and policy implementation, positioning students to take the lead in their organization and play a role in managing tax dollars and developing budgets.

Religion

The religion major requires courses across a range of religious traditions, including elective coursework in a primary area of Christianity/Biblical Religions or Asian Religions, culminating in two semesters of colloquium on discerning your calling.

Social Justice and Social Change

The major in Social Justice and Social Change is interdisciplinary, yet with a sociological core. Taking a sociological perspective invites students to examine their world with the curiosity and fascination they might bring to a culture with which they are wholly unfamiliar. The major consists of 14 courses (56 credits).

Social Studies

The social studies major provides an interdisciplinary approach to the study of people and their institutions. The ultimate goal of social studies is citizenship education and the development of civic competence. The major totals 13-15 courses and complies with Minnesota licensure standards for secondary social studies teachers.

STEM Education

The Bachelor of Science in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education prepares students for secondary teaching in STEM disciplines and puts them on the pathway toward a teaching license in Life Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Physics, and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Students choose one of four concentrations: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics.

Study of Law

The Master in the Study of Law combines the foundational training of an ABA-approved paralegal certificate with specific, in-depth study, providing a highly-nuanced understanding of how the law and legal system impact one's work. All courses are available online.

Teacher Leadership in TESOL

The Teacher Leadership in TESOL Certificate is for English language teachers interested in advancing their leadership skills, covering advocacy, sociopolitical issues affecting multilingual learners, and distributed leadership. The 10-credit certificate can be stacked into other programs.

Teaching

The Master of Arts in Teaching with Initial Licensure is designed for working adults and provides an initial teaching license leading to a master's degree, with field placements integrated throughout the program. Licensure areas include elementary, secondary content areas, ESL, adult basic education, and special education.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

Hamline's TEFL Certificate prepares individuals to become effective teachers of English to speakers of foreign languages, providing the industry-standard number of contact hours plus 40 hours of teaching and observation. It is offered in two evening courses of four credits each.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

The TEFL Certificate prepares individuals to become effective teachers of English to speakers of foreign languages. Through workshops and lectures, students learn valuable and practical teaching methods and techniques and apply them by planning and teaching lessons with a class of non-native English speakers.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

The Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages provides students with an in-depth analysis of the latest research and innovation in the field, preparing them for careers with private and public institutions in the U.S. and abroad. It is offered in a dynamic, fully online format.

Writing

The Master of Fine Arts in Writing is a terminal degree for students who wish to pursue careers as writers and teach writing at the college level or seek professional work in the literary marketplace. Offered full- or part-time, it provides depth and breadth in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and hybrid forms.

Writing for Children and Young Adults

The Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults is a low-residency program for writers who wish to significantly increase their knowledge and skills in writing for children and young adults. Students travel to Hamline's St. Paul campus twice a year for intensive 11-day residencies.
