Biology

Given the fast-changing and broad nature of the biological sciences, the Biology Major is designed to provide students with flexibility in pursuing their interests and long-term educational and career goals.

Biology and Chemistry (Double Major)

A Biology and Chemistry double major is required to take between 91 and 95 credit hours of courses, including an Introductory Biology Core, Biology core courses from the Cell and Molecular, Organismal, and Population Biology categories, advanced Biology courses, Seminar requirements, 35 credit hours of Chemistry Requirements, and supporting Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science requirements.

Business Administration

The Department of Business Administration offers the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting, Finance, International Business, Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, and Retail Management. A major in Business Administration consists of 61-70 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 46 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 6-15 elective hours.

Chemistry

A Chemistry major is required to take up to 59 credit hours of courses. These include 38 credit hours of Chemistry Requirements, 7 credit hours of Seminar Requirements, up to 6 credit hours of Mathematics, and 8 credit hours of Physics Requirements.

Communication Arts

The course offerings in Rhetoric and Communication Studies focus on the study of verbal and professional communication, including introductory courses in verbal and written rhetoric and pre-professional and professional communications, such as broadcast journalism, public relations, and video and audio editing.

Computer Engineering

A major in Computer Engineering consists of 67 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 43 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 9 elective hours. The program prepares students for competitive careers and graduate school opportunities across the Information Technology profession, including hardware, robotics and automatic control systems, digital signal processing, and digital/analog electronics.

Computer Science/Information Systems

A major in Computer Science/Information Systems consists of 70 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 43 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 9 elective hours. Coursework combines a Computer Science core with Computer Science requirements and Accounting, Business, and Marketing requirements to prepare students for careers in software, programming, systems analysis, networking, and information systems.

Criminology

A Criminology major is required to take 63 credit hours of courses to complete their major, a portion of which may be satisfied by completing General Education requirements. These courses consist of a Required Core of 51 credit hours, a 3 credit hour Statistics Requirement, and 9 credit hours of Social Science Requirements.

Cultural Studies

A major in Cultural Studies consists of 51 program credit hours, made up of 27 credit hours of Required Core Courses and 24 hours in the Concentration Areas. Students choose one of five concentrations (Critical Studies in Race, Gender and Sexuality, Popular Culture, Religious Studies, or Generalist) and take four courses within that concentration plus four elective courses.

Dance

The Dance Major Program provides studio-based and theory-based instruction in both Western European and African derived dance forms, in preparation for careers or graduate study in dance. Admission to the Dance Major is by audition only. A Dance major is required to take 53 credit hours of courses, consisting of a Required Core of 49 credit hours and four additional credit hours.

Information Systems Engineering

A major in Information Systems Engineering consists of 67 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 43 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 9 elective hours. The curriculum combines a Computer Science core with Computer Engineering requirements, restricted electives, and Mathematics and Physics requirements.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The Interdisciplinary Studies Major, leading to the Bachelor of Arts Degree, is open to all students by application and approval, and its core courses occur within a structured learning community. The major consists of 63 program credit hours: 15 credit hours of Required Core Courses, 30 credit hours in a Major Concentration Area, and 18 credit hours in a Minor Concentration Area.

Mathematics

A major in Mathematics consists of 59-60 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 43 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses (11 of which count toward the major) and at least 30 free elective credit hours. The mathematics program provides basic skills in mathematics for the general student body, intermediate and advanced skills for students in other majors, and an in-depth program for majors.

Mathematics with Concentration in Pre-Mathematical Finance

A major in Mathematics with a Concentration in Pre-Mathematical Finance consists of 86-87 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 43 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses (11 of which count toward the major) and at least three free elective hours. Requirements include the Mathematics core, Mathematics requirements and electives, and 27 credit hours of pre-Finance courses.

Music

A Music major with a Concentration in Performance is required to take between 51 and 56 credit hours of courses, including a Required Core of 43 credit hours. Students select an Emphasis in Voice, Piano, or Instrumental performance, each of which adds additional required credit hours.

Political Science

A Political Science major is required to take 60 credit hours of courses to complete their major. These courses consist of a Required Core of 30 credit hours, 18 credit hours of Political Science electives, and a 12-credit hour Social Science Requirement.

Psychology

A Psychology major is required to take 47 credit hours of courses, consisting of a Required Core of 22 credit hours, a 3 credit hour Mathematics Requirement, a 4 credit hour Biology Requirement, and 18 hours drawn from cafeteria categories in clinical/health, applied, developmental/educational, and sociocultural/personality psychology. The Department of Natural and Behavioral Sciences awards a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.

Public Health

A major in Public Health consists of 59 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 46 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 6 elective hours. The Department of Health and Human Performance prepares students for careers in health promotion, public health, and related areas and for further study in their selected fields.

Social Work

The mission of the Master of Social Work (MSW) program is advanced generalist culturally competent practice with individuals and families, small groups, organizations and communities. The MSW program at JCSU will prepare graduates who share a common foundation based on advanced generalist social work practice and who demonstrate leadership in culturally competent social work practice.

Social Work

A Social Work major is required to take 122 credit hours of courses, consisting of 48 credit hours of Social Work Requirements, 9 credit hours of Social Work Electives, and eight credit hours of Biology. The Bachelor of Social Work Program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Sport Management

A major in Sport Management consists of 54 program credit hours; in addition, all students must take 46 credit hours of Liberal Studies courses and at least 6 elective hours. The curriculum includes a Sport Management core, a General Management core, and a Professional Sport Management core.
