National Center for Asphalt Technology at Auburn University
Aggregate Technician
This is a three-day classroom and laboratory course that takes place over two half-days and two full days. The emphasis will be on developing an understanding of the ALDOT Procedure for the Acceptance of Fine and Coarse Aggregates (ALDOT Procedure 249).
CourseAsphalt Level I Technician
Emphasis is placed on mastering test procedures essential for controlling asphalt pavement quality. Topics include asphalt plant operations, producing quality asphalt mixtures, volumetric analysis, asphalt mixture sampling, random sampling techniques, Rice and bulk specific gravity, lab compaction (Marshall & Superpave), asphalt content determination (ignition & nuclear gauge), extraction gradation, fine aggregate angularity, and clay content (sand equivalent).
CourseEarthwork/Base Technician
The objective is to equip technicians with a strong understanding of the principles and procedures needed to ensure quality construction of various earthwork and base courses.
CourseRadiation Safety
This one-day classroom course (spanning two half-days) is designed to ensure that individuals who use nuclear density gauges and nuclear asphalt content gauges understand proper safety protocols.
CourseRadiation Safety Officer
This is a one-day classroom course designed to train designated individuals in proper procedures for conducting and documenting a radiation safety program.
CourseRoadway Technician Level 1
The objective is to give entry-level technicians a basic understanding of asphalt paving projects with limited coverage specifications, calculations, and best practices for quality pavements.
CourseRoadway Technician Level 2
The course focuses on various aspects of asphalt pavement construction, including delivery, placement and compaction of asphalt mixtures, random sampling procedures, and computation of pay factors for asphalt pavements.
