Anthropology

The major in anthropology consists of 11 courses and an experiential co-requisite component. Core courses cover human origins, cultural anthropology, archaeology, and language and human experience, followed by electives and advanced work in the subfields.

Art and Art History

Major offered with concentrations in art history or studio art or both areas. The art history concentration requires 10 units (8 art history/2 studio); the studio concentration combines studio electives across at least two different media with art history coursework.

Biochemistry

An interdisciplinary major administered jointly by the biology and chemistry departments. Students majoring in biochemistry may not also double-major or minor in biology, neuroscience or chemistry.

Biology

The biology department offers a major and minor, and also administers or co-administers biochemistry (with chemistry), biology–physics (with physics), biomedical sciences, conservation biology, and neuroscience (with psychology). A combined major is also offered with environmental studies.

Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical sciences majors complete a predetermined set of biology, chemistry and related courses. Students entering with an interest in biomedical sciences should enroll in General Biology in their first year and seek early advisement from a biomedical sciences faculty or staff member.

Biophysics

Listed in the catalog's Inventory of Registered Programs as Biophysics and described in the Courses of Study as the interdisciplinary biology–physics major, administered jointly by the biology and physics departments. Required work spans physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics.

Business in the Liberal Arts

Offered only as the second part of a double major: business in the liberal arts majors must also complete another major at St. Lawrence. Students may declare the major during the second semester of the sophomore year, after declaring their primary major.

Chemistry

Chemistry majors elect from two basic plans of study: Plan 1 provides basic preparation for medical or dental school and secondary school teaching and greater flexibility for study abroad or double majors, while Plan 2 is endorsed by the American Chemical Society's committee on professional training and leads to ACS certification.

Computer Science

Offered under the auspices of the mathematics, computer science and statistics department. The major requires 11 units, consisting of six foundational courses, four electives, and a senior-year experience.

Conservation Biology

A multidisciplinary major in which students complete a predetermined set of courses and are strongly encouraged to complete some study outside of northeastern North America through study abroad, a biological field station, or courses with a travel component. First-year students considering the major should seek early advisement and begin the introductory courses in their first year.

Cybersecurity

Offered under the auspices of the mathematics, computer science, and statistics department. The major requires 12 units consisting of five core courses, four technical electives, two related electives, and an experiential learning component.

Data Science

Offered under the auspices of the mathematics, computer science, and statistics department. The major builds on foundational courses in calculus, computer programming, applied statistics and regression analysis.

Digital Media and Film Studies

The Digital Media and Film major consists of 12 courses plus an experiential component, spanning foundation courses, production electives, and film, media and society electives.

Economics

The economics curriculum is designed to familiarize students with economic theory and the economic way of thinking, to provide knowledge about economic institutions, to foster skills in applying economic analysis to contemporary issues, and to create a foundation for critical thinking and engaged citizenship. Economics majors may not double major in finance.

Economics–Mathematics

An interdisciplinary major that gives students an opportunity to explore the relationship between economics and mathematics through a highly structured program of study. It allows students to study economic theory and applied economics more rigorously than is possible in the usual curriculum and to apply mathematics and statistics to economic problems.

English

One of the University's registered Bachelor of Arts programs, listed among the majors offered in the Courses of Study section and in the Inventory of Registered Programs.

Environmental Studies

The stand-alone environmental studies major serves students who wish to concentrate their efforts in environmental studies. Tailored to individual interests, it emphasizes depth in selected subjects as well as the integrative, interdisciplinary approaches of environmental studies.

Environmental Studies–Biology

A combined interdisciplinary major that lets students integrate substantial work in biology with the integrative approaches of environmental studies. It builds on the seven-unit environmental studies combined-major core plus general biology, general ecology and biology electives.

Environmental Studies–Economics

A combined interdisciplinary major joining the environmental studies core with economic theory, quantitative methods, and environmental or natural resource economics. Students work closely with advisors in both departments.

Environmental Studies–English

A combined interdisciplinary major joining the seven-unit environmental studies core with coursework in English. Students work closely with advisors in both departments.

Environmental Studies–Mathematics

A combined interdisciplinary major joining the environmental studies core with the calculus sequence, differential equations, mathematical modeling and applied statistics. It is one of two B.S. options emphasizing environmental science.

Environmental Studies–Political Science

A combined interdisciplinary major joining the environmental studies core with introductory and advanced political science coursework, including an environmentally focused political science elective and a research seminar.

Environmental Studies–Sociology

A combined interdisciplinary major joining the environmental studies core with sociological theory, research methods, socio-environmental dynamics courses and a research-based capstone.

Estudios Hispánicos

Offered by the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. The major consists of nine courses at the 103 level or above, one of which may be a cultural course related to the field taught in English through the department.

Finance

Finance is a specialized branch of economics built upon microeconomic and macroeconomic theories as applied to financial markets and firm financial structure. Students may double major in finance and business in the liberal arts but may not double major in economics and finance.

Francophone Studies

Offered by the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. The major consists of nine courses at the 103 level or above, one of which may be a cultural course related to the field taught in English through the department; study on the University's program in France counts toward the major.

Geology

The geology curriculum offers two tracks, geology and environmental geology. Students take nine to eleven core courses to meet minimum department requirements for graduation with the Bachelor of Science degree in geology.

Global Studies

The major requires 14-15 units, including eight global studies core courses, an off-campus study program, and a concentration. Students choose among comparative area studies, one-area intense study, or area and thematic study, each including study of a second language.

History

The requirements for the major in history are flexible enough to enable students to pursue personal interests and goals while fostering an appreciation for the diversity of the human experience. A minimum of nine history courses is required, with geographical and chronological distribution.

International Economics–French

One of the combined majors offered jointly by the economics department and the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. Students complete 7.5 units of required international economics coursework plus seven units of French at the 103 level or higher.

International Economics–Multi-Language

One of the combined majors offered jointly by the economics department and the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. Students complete the 7.5-unit international economics core plus three courses in one language and three in a concentration language at the 103 level and above.

International Economics–Spanish

One of the combined majors offered jointly by the economics department and the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. Students complete the 7.5-unit international economics core plus seven units of Spanish at the 103 level or higher.

Leadership

Since fall semester 2021, St. Lawrence has offered a Master of Arts in Leadership degree program, the University's only graduate degree, housed in the education department. It focuses on leadership studies for students interested in a variety of careers in education, coaching, and leadership broadly; graduate credit at St. Lawrence is offered only through the education department.

Mathematics

Offered under the auspices of the mathematics, computer science and statistics department. The major requires 11 units, including four core mathematics courses, one analysis course, one algebra course, five electives, and a capstone experience.

Multifield Program (BA)

The multi-field major program is designed for students who wish to study intensively in a multidisciplinary field but cannot achieve this goal through an existing major program, providing an opportunity to design their own program of study. A student must submit a proposal for their individual plan of study to the Academic Advising Committee.

Multifield Program (BS)

The multi-field major program is designed for students who wish to study intensively in a multidisciplinary field but cannot achieve this goal through an existing major program, providing an opportunity to design their own program of study. A multi-field major may elect the Bachelor of Science when the major consists of two fields and one is appropriate to that degree.

Multi-Language

Offered by the department of World Languages, Cultures, and Media. The major consists of four courses at the 103 level and above in a designated language of concentration plus three courses in each of two other languages; a World Cultures and Media track totaling 10 units is also available.

Music

Music majors complete MUS 200 or 201, MUS 210 and MUS 220, at least five other full-unit music courses (two at the 300 level), and at least three semesters of participation in a music department ensemble.

Neuroscience

An interdisciplinary major administered jointly by the biology and psychology departments in which students may elect a cellular track or a behavioral track. Students are advised to seek early advisement from a biology or psychology faculty member and to begin introductory courses in each department in the first year.

Peace Corps Prep

The Peace Corps Prep Certificate Program, housed in the Center for International and Intercultural Studies, helps students acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to serve in the U.S. Peace Corps. Participants build knowledge and skills through coursework, service learning, and field work.

Performance and Communication Arts

Most students who major in the department begin with an interest in one of its two broad areas of inquiry, rhetoric/communication studies or theatre/performance studies, and choose a primary area of concentration. Eleven units are required to complete the major.

Philosophy

A major in philosophy consists of nine courses: six core courses spanning texts and contexts, logic and argumentation, ethics and values, power and privilege, and knowledge and reality, plus two electives and a senior-year experience.

Physics

The requirements for a major in physics total 11 course units, including the upper-level laboratory sequence and senior-year research. The department also participates in the interdisciplinary biology-physics and geology-physics majors.

Political Science

The major in political science requires the completion of nine units, including core introductory courses in American politics, comparative politics and international relations. Students entering with an interest in political science are advised to enroll in two 100-level core courses in their first year.

Pre-Health Chemistry

A major in pre-health chemistry provides basic preparation for continuing in health fields including medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry and pharmacy, while offering greater flexibility for study abroad or additional majors and minors. As part of the degree, students take two courses that investigate the implications of various social constructs on health and healthcare.

Psychology

The major in psychology requires a minimum of 9.75 units of credit: 8.75 units of psychology courses plus STAT 113. Coursework must include distribution across biological/evolutionary, social/cognitive and applied themes, with laboratory and seminar requirements.

Public Health

The public health major consists of 13 units, including six core public health courses, six cross-listed electives addressing global and cross-cultural, critical humanistic, and scientific perspectives on health, and STAT 113.

Religious Studies

Ten units are required within the field of religious studies, including Explaining Religion, three 200-level survey courses drawn from different religious worlds, and the majors seminar. With permission of the department chair, certain courses outside the department may also count toward the major.

Sociology

The sociology major requires a minimum of nine units, including foundations of social theory, research methods, and an advanced topics seminar. See also environmental studies for the environmental studies-sociology combined major.

Statistics

Offered under the auspices of the mathematics, computer science and statistics department. The major requires 11 units consisting of nine foundational courses and two electives, plus a capstone experience.
