Accounting

The accounting major is administered by the School of Business. The bachelor's degree in accounting is not by itself designed to prepare students for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant; students must take additional business-related coursework to reach the required 150 semester hours.

Art

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art provides students with the essential skills, tools, and resources needed for personal interpretation and artistic expression. The major is offered through the Department of Visual Arts and Media.

Athletic Coaching

A non-degree certification option for students not seeking a master's degree or as an add-on to a pre-existing master's degree. Coursework includes Contemporary Issues in Sports, Psychology of Coaching, Strength Training and Conditioning, and Using Data for Coaching. Time to completion is two semesters.

Biochemistry

The major in Biochemistry is built upon the principles and recommendations of the American Society of Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (ASBMB). Students are prepared for advanced study in graduate or professional school or for careers in chemistry and biochemistry in industry or secondary education. Senior research is a requirement of all biochemistry majors.

Biochemistry (3+4 PharmD with Northeast Ohio Medical University)

This 3+4 BS to Doctor of Pharmacy partnership with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) allows students to complete all requirements for both an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and a Doctor of Pharmacy in seven years of full-time study. Students complete their first three years of full-time study at Mount Union, immediately followed by four years of study at NEOMED.

Biology

With two concentrations offered, the Bachelor of Science in Biology prepares students for careers as research scientists, pharmaceutical/biomedical sales representatives, physician's assistants, and occupational therapists. All Biology majors must complete a Senior Culminating Experience.

This 3+4 BS to Doctor of Pharmacy partnership with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) allows students to complete all requirements for both an undergraduate degree in Biology and a Doctor of Pharmacy in seven years of full-time study. Biomedical Engineering

Offered through the Samuel W. and Dolores E. Brenton School of Engineering and accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The program provides technical breadth and depth integrated with experiential learning, business and entrepreneurship, strong communication skills, and a required global experience.

Business Administration

The goal of the online Master of Business Administration (MBA) program is to cultivate and refine analytic and leadership skills through knowledge acquisition and the integration of research and practice. Concentrations are available in Business Analytics, Leadership and Innovation, Strategic Healthcare Administration, Artificial Intelligence, Finance, and Cybersecurity.

Chemistry

The major in Chemistry is built upon the principles and recommendations of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Instruction emphasizes the use of modern scientific instruments, electronic resources, research work, and independent work; senior research is required of all chemistry majors. The department is approved by the ACS and offers a Certified Degree.

Civil Engineering

Offered through the Samuel W. and Dolores E. Brenton School of Engineering and accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The curriculum makes use of experiential and collaborative learning in lecture, laboratory, and simulation courses and requires a global experience.

Computer Engineering

Offered through the Samuel W. and Dolores E. Brenton School of Engineering and accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The program prepares graduates to become leaders in the engineering profession through experiential learning and integration of engineering education with business and entrepreneurship.

Computer Science

The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science offers programs in Computer Science which give students a broad background in the fields of the discipline. The mission of the program is to prepare students to engage in meaningful work in the computing disciplines, adapt to today's rapidly-changing digital landscape, and use information technology in an effective and ethical manner.

Criminal Justice

The Criminal Justice major requires 56 semester hours divided into a 36-hour core and a 20-hour set of electives. Majors are encouraged to develop proficiency in at least one modern world language, and all Criminal Justice majors are required to minor in Sociology.

Data Science & Analytics

The Data Science & Analytics program gives students the breadth and depth of theoretical knowledge and practical skills to generate actionable insights and facilitate critical and timely decision-making in a Big Data environment. Students learn to interface with structured and unstructured data, extract, analyze and visualize information, and develop predictive models.

Education

The online Master of Education (M.Ed.) program is designed to develop leaders ready to meet the challenges of creating highly-effective learning communities. The program engages candidates in a transformational process of systematic problem solving and data-driven decision-making. Concentrations include Athletic Coaching, Educational Leadership, Ohio Principal Licensure, and Instructional Design and Technology.

English

The English major's focus on developing superior core skills of interpretation and communication prepares students for success in a wide range of professions, including teaching, professional writing, and law. The flexible skill set of the English major is an advantage in both traditional and emerging fields.

Environmental Science

The environmental science major at Mount Union is an interdisciplinary major that seeks to develop environmentally informed professionals and citizens who can contribute to responsible environmental management and who possess leadership, teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Exercise Science

The exercise science program is designed to meet the increasing demand for quality health care professionals. The Graduate Track prepares students for graduate and professional programs such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and physician assistant studies, while the Applied Track prepares students for the workforce in personal training, worksite wellness, fitness facilities and sport performance coaching.

Family Nurse Practitioner

The Post-Graduate APRN FNP Certificate program requires completion of APRN pre-requisites (Advanced Pathophysiology, Advanced Pharmacology, and Advanced Health Assessment) and completion of 24 credit hours, which includes 750 hours of clinical practicum and two required on-campus skills intensives. Successful completion allows the student to be eligible to apply to sit for the ANCC or AANP national certification exam.

Finance

The finance major prepares students for careers in finance, including investments, financial institutions, financial planning, and corporate finance. Distinctive features include courses on financial practice and theory used within modern corporations and financial institutions, internship opportunities for academic credit, and personalized guidance from faculty.

French

The world language majors in French, Japanese, and Spanish prepare students for careers where an understanding of a world language and culture is needed, such as in business, government, social work, and law, as well as for graduate study and the teaching profession. The major consists of 32 or 30 semester hours of study in the target language depending on point of entry.

History

The major in History helps students attain a broad base of knowledge in history and acquire the intellectual and communication skills necessary to an undergraduate education in history. Majors take a total of 44 credit hours and complete a Senior Culminating Experience course; an AYA track is offered for those who want to teach in the K-12 system.

Human Development & Family Science

Human Development and Family Science is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the study of human development from a systems perspective, examining the dynamic transaction of human life and the environment. All HDFS majors take 44 semester hours: 28 required hours and 16 distribution hours selected from three categories.

Human Resources Management

Human Resources Management is a bachelor's degree program offered at University of Mount Union.

Instructional Design and Technology

A non-degree certification option for students not seeking a master's degree or as an add-on to a pre-existing master's degree. Coursework includes Foundations in Instructional Design, Topics in Learning Design and Technology, and a Capstone. Time to completion is one to two semesters.

International Affairs & Diplomacy

Students majoring in International Affairs and Diplomacy must minor in a world language or demonstrate competence in one modern world language that is not their native language. Majors are required to participate in either a study abroad program or in a foreign policy-related internship.

Intervention Specialist

The intervention specialist major prepares candidates for one of two areas of focus: primary intervention specialist or mild/moderate intervention specialist. The primary intervention specialist license is valid for teaching learners with mild/moderate/intensive education needs in grades P-5, and the mild/moderate license is valid for learners with mild/moderate needs from ages 5 through 21 and kindergarten through grade 12.

Japanese

The world language majors in French, Japanese, and Spanish prepare students for careers where an understanding of a world language and culture is needed, such as in business, government, social work, and law, as well as for graduate study and the teaching profession. The major consists of 32 or 30 semester hours of study in the target language depending on point of entry.

Management

The management major is designed to prepare students for a career in business in a variety of firms and career paths and is the most broad and general of the business majors offered. All students complete courses in operations management, human resource management, and strategy and then select electives emphasizing areas such as leadership, labor, logistics, or project management.

Marketing

The marketing major is designed to prepare students to develop and implement effective marketing strategies involving product, pricing, promotion, and distribution decisions in organizational environments. The course of study integrates marketing research, consumer behavior, and marketing communications while providing opportunities to explore personal selling, international marketing and internet marketing.

Mathematics

Mathematics provides instruction in mathematics as a major independent area of knowledge and preparation for study in other disciplines, offering experience in deductive reasoning, critical analysis and problem solving. A major in mathematics equips students for careers in business, industry, government or education and prepares them for graduate study.

Mechanical Engineering

The program provides technical breadth and depth integrated with experiential learning, business and entrepreneurship, strong communication skills, and a required global experience.

Media

The Media major seeks to provide students with the skills, experience, and knowledge needed to succeed in a variety of media fields. With an emphasis on media studies and production, students receive a theoretical base coupled with practical opportunities contributing to a broad base of knowledge and experience.

Middle Childhood Education

The middle childhood major offers a choice of four different areas of emphasis leading to licensure: English/language arts, science, social studies and mathematics for grades 4-9. The middle childhood major chooses two areas of emphasis in addition to a minor area of study.

Multi-Platform Software Development

Offered by the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Data Science, the Multi-Platform Software Development major builds on programming, database, and networking coursework together with software engineering fundamentals.

Music

As a liberal arts degree, the Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music allows the student to hone skills in musicianship, to focus on a primary performance area, to gain keyboard competency, and to acquire a solid grounding in theory and music history, while completing significant coursework in another academic discipline. Students may also complete a concentration in Music Composition or Music Performance.

Music Education

As a professional degree in music education as defined by the National Association of Schools of Music, the Music Education program focuses on developing skills in musicianship and performance, as well as conducting, rehearsing vocal, instrumental, and mixed ensembles, and teaching general music classes pre-K through grade 12. Successful completion, along with all Teacher Education Program guidelines and state licensure exams, may lead to a P-12 Multi-Age License in Music in the State of Ohio.

National Security & Intelligence Analysis

National Security and Intelligence Analysis majors are required to participate in a national security-related internship and must select either the Analyst Concentration or the Cyber Security Concentration. All NSIA majors must also minor in a World Language.

Neuroscience

The Neuroscience major provides courses focused on the structure and function of the central and peripheral nervous system and how they impact cognition, emotion, and behavior. All Neuroscience majors take 44 semester hours: 24 required core hours, 8 required extra-departmental hours, and 12 hours of electives from two categories.

Nursing

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) curriculum prepares registered nurses for advanced clinical practice and leadership roles. The curriculum requires the completion of 46 credit hours, which includes 750 hours of supervised clinical preceptorships in various clinical practice settings and two on-campus skills intensives. Graduates are eligible to sit for the ANCC or AANP national certification exam.

Nursing

The University of Mount Union offers three options for the BSN degree: the traditional and fast-track BSN options for prospective students who successfully finished high school, and the Post-Baccalaureate Accelerated BSN track for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in a discipline other than nursing. The BSN program pursues academic, clinical and professional excellence leading to licensure as a registered nurse.

Occupational Therapy

The entry-level occupational therapy master's degree program is a hybrid program offered through online coursework and four on-campus immersive learning experiences. Students must complete the didactic portion with an overall 3.0 GPA and pass both 12-week Level II fieldwork placements. Graduates are eligible to sit for the NBCOT certification examination.

Ohio Principal Licensure

A non-degree certification option for students already holding a master's degree. Coursework includes School Finance, Professional Development, School Law, Human Resources, and two principal internships. Time to completion is three semesters or one academic year.

Physical Education Pedagogy

The physical education pedagogy major requires 36 hours of coursework, with additional hours to complete within the Education Department for students seeking to fulfill the state of Ohio teacher licensure requirements. Majors fulfill the Senior Culminating Experience requirement by presenting assessment projects in Assessment in Health and Physical Education.

Physical Therapy

Students enter the Physical Therapy Program as a cohort for a 36-month doctoral program. Graduation requires successful completion of all required courses, passing an annual comprehensive exam and an annual comprehensive practical exam, performing at entry level on all criteria outlined in the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI), and submitting and presenting at a university, state, or national research forum.

Physician Assistant Studies

The degree offered is a Master of Science in physician assistant studies. All students accepted into the Physician Assistant Program are enrolled in an identical course schedule for the didactic year (first four semesters); during the clinical year students complete eight required clinical rotations and two elective clinical rotations. The program is 27 months in length.

Physics

The physics major develops a strong undergraduate knowledge of the fundamental principles of physics and prepares the student with professional skills essential for career success across disciplines. Every major conducts independent, hands-on research with oral and written presentations, and students choose an area of concentration in fundamental or applied physics.

Political Science

Offered through the Department of Social Sciences, the Political Science major builds critical thinking, analytical, and written and oral communication skills. Political Science majors are strongly encouraged to participate in an internship, and credits earned during the internship can count toward the major.

Political Science and Law (3+3 JD Programs)

The 3+3 Political Science and Law Program allows highly motivated students to complete all requirements for both an undergraduate degree in Political Science and a Juris Doctor degree in six years of full-time study rather than the traditional seven. Students complete three years of full-time study at Mount Union followed by three years at either the University of Akron School of Law or Capital University Law School.

Primary Education

The primary education major and license prepare candidates to work with typically developing and included children in the early grades. The School of Education's Teacher Education Program is approved by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Higher Education and accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

Psychology

The psychology major is designed to reflect the basic and applied aspects of psychological science, with a rigorous core emphasizing research methods and data analysis skills culminating in the production and presentation of completed research projects. All psychology majors take 44 semester hours: 20 required hours, 12 distribution hours selected from three categories, and 12 hours of electives.

Public Relations

The Public Relations major will transition students into creative and strategical problem-solvers who utilize all forms of communication to develop and maintain effective relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Students research problems and opportunities, analyze stakeholder groups, develop strategic and ethical communication programs utilizing all media, and apply evaluation methods to measure program results.

Self-Defined Major

A self-defined major is available to a student interested in pursuing a concentration of study not specified in the Catalog. Such majors must satisfy all University requirements for graduation, must be consistent with the learning goals of the University, and must be approved by the Academic Policies Committee.

Social Justice & Diversity Studies (3+2 with Methodist Theological School in Ohio)

The 3+2 Social Justice & Diversity Studies and Master of Arts in Social Justice program allows highly motivated students to complete all requirements for both an undergraduate degree in a self-defined major and a graduate degree from the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) in five years of full-time study. Students complete three years of full-time study at Mount Union followed by two years of full-time study at MTSO.

Sociology

The primary mission of the sociology program is to provide a program through which students can develop the ability to scientifically study human social behavior. This includes understanding of core abilities, sociological knowledge, professionalization, personal enrichment, and community engagement.

Spanish

The world language majors in French, Japanese, and Spanish prepare students for careers where an understanding of a world language and culture is needed, such as in business, government, social work, and law, as well as for graduate study and the teaching profession. The major consists of 32 or 30 semester hours of study in the target language depending on point of entry.

Sport Business

The sport business major is designed for students interested in joining the growing field of sport managers, directors, promoters, marketers and administrators. A demand for well-trained individuals in sport-related fields creates possible employment with professional sport teams, colleges and universities, private clubs, government agencies, city recreation departments and the Y.M.C.A.

Theatre

The theatre major is administered through the Department of Performing Arts and integrates the strengths of the liberal arts tradition with the career preparation skills necessary to graduates in the field of theatre. Students complete a common core and then emphasize either the performance or production aspects of theatre through one of three tracks: Design/Technical, Musical Theatre, or Performance. Admission to the program requires an audition or portfolio review.
