Position Summary
The Welding Technician uses hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering, or brazing equipment to weld or join metal components and to fill holes, indentations, or seams in fabricated metal products. Working from welding charts, blueprints, and specifications, the technician selects appropriate equipment and methods, performs welds in flat, vertical, or overhead positions, and inspects finished work to ensure it meets quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
• Operate safety equipment and follow safe work habits at all times.
• Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Use hand-welding, flame-cutting, hand-soldering, or brazing equipment to join metal components or fill holes, indentations, and seams.
• Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux according to welding chart specifications.
• Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metal.
• Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating or warping of parts.
• Examine workpieces for defects and measure them with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance to specifications.
• Weld separately or in combination using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other metals.
• Operate metal-shaping, straightening, and bending machines such as brakes and shears.
• Clean or degrease parts using wire brushes, portable grinders, or chemical baths.
• Detect faulty operation of equipment or defective materials and notify supervisors.

- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
