Skills & Competencies

Skills developed through this program

  • Sample and test brick and structural clay tiles in compliance with ASTM C67 specimen selection, quantity, and identification requirements
  • Sample and test concrete masonry units by removing loose materials, obtaining received weights, and following specimen selection and identification procedures per ASTM C140
  • Evaluate field mortars using ASTM C780 procedures including sampling, mixing, preparation, and batch-to-batch variation assessment for both pre-construction and construction phases
  • Perform mortar consistency testing using the cone penetration method per ASTM C780 Annex A1 with appropriate apparatus and reporting requirements
  • Assess mortar consistency retention per ASTM C780 Annex A2 to evaluate workability over time during construction
  • Determine mortar aggregate ratio in the field using ASTM C780 Annex A4 procedures and required apparatus

Detailed information about this program

Scope and Knowledge: This program requires demonstration of the knowledge and hands-on skills covered on the Job Task Analysis (JTA): JTA for ACI Masonry Field Testing Technician Certification The JTA is a detailed list of specific points of knowledge and skills that may be included in the examinations for this ACI Certification program. ACI urges candidates to use the JTA to prepare for the certification exams. The program requires a working knowledge of field procedures selected from the following ASTM test methods and practices, covered in the ACI-published workbook: C67 – 24—Sampling and Testing Brick and Structural Clay Tile C140/C140M – 24a—Sampling and Testing Concrete Masonry Units and Related Units C780 – 25—Preconstruction and Construction Evaluation of Mortars for Plain and Reinforced Unit Masonry and Annexes C1019 – 24a—Sampling and Testing Grout C1314 – 24—Compressive Strength of Masonry Prisms The ACI-published workbook also covers the following standards. If you do not use the ACI-published workbook to prepare for the certification exams, you must also acquire: C109/C109M—Compressive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars (Using 2-in. or [50-mm] Cube Specimens) C143/C143M—Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete C1064/C1064M—Temperature of Freshly Mixed Hydraulic-Cement Concrete Certification Requirements: ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements: A passing grade on the ACI written examination; AND Successful completion of the ACI performance examination. The one-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 60 multiple-choice questions. There are between 8 and 12 questions on each of the ASTM test methods and practices. To pass the written examination, BOTH of the following conditions must be met: At least 60% correct for each of the required test methods and practices; AND A minimum score of 70% overall. The performance examination is also closed-book and requires actual demonstration of select field procedures described in ASTM test methods C140/C140M, C780, and C1019. The examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform (or describe, where allowed) required steps for each procedure. Certification is valid for a period of five years from the date of successfully completing all requirements. Recertification requires successful completion of both the written and performance examinations.
