Candidates for the Ph.D. complete a research seminar, two courses in a second field of study, research design, and dissertation credit beyond the M.A. requirements. A reading knowledge of two foreign languages or advanced proficiency in one is required. Each doctoral student must pass written comprehensive examinations in the major field, an oral examination focused on the dissertation, and defend a dissertation.
