Catawba College

Accounting

Offered by the Department of Business, Economics, and Society in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business. Students earning the B.A. in Accounting are eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination in North Carolina and the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examination. Students may also prepare for licensure as a CPA by completing the CPA Ready program (150 semester hours of college credit) while at Catawba College.

Administration of Justice

Offered by the Department of Politics. Students complete a 33-34 hour core and then select a concentration in Interpersonal Behavior, Law Operations, or Social Justice, for a combined total of 42-44 hours.

Advertising and Branding

Offered by the Department of Communication Arts and Media. Students complete the 18-hour Communication Arts and Media core plus 24 hours in the major area, covering design tools, copywriting and brand storytelling, media law and ethics, and campaigns and branding.

Biochemistry

Offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Students seeking a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry may not minor in Biology or Chemistry.

Biology (B.A.)

Offered by the Department of Biology in the James F. & Gerry T. Hurley School of Arts and Sciences. Students earning a B.A. in Biology must also earn a minor in a different field of study approved by department faculty, bringing the combined total to 57-60 hours.

Biology (B.S.)

Offered by the Department of Biology in the James F. & Gerry T. Hurley School of Arts and Sciences. The B.S. is the more science-intensive of the two biology degrees, requiring additional chemistry, physics, and upper-level biology coursework.

Birth-Kindergarten Education

The Department of Teacher Education of the Goodman School of Education offers the Birth-Kindergarten Education major with concentrations in Licensure and Non-Licensure through Catawba Online. Admission requires an A.A.S. in Early Childhood or an equivalent degree; students with the A.A.S. in Early Childhood Education from a North Carolina Community College may transfer up to 64 semester hours.

Business Administration

Within the Ketner School of Business, the MBA program is a fully online 36 credit hour program consisting of a MBA core of eight courses plus four courses in a concentration (general management or healthcare administration), designed to allow full-time students to complete the program of study in a calendar year and part-time students to earn their degree in two years.

Business Administration (B.B.A.)

Offered through Catawba Online in a block and online format that allows students to enroll full time while maintaining full-time employment. Concentrations are available in Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Information Systems, and Professional Accounting.

Business Administration (B.S.)

Offered by the Department of Business, Economics, and Society in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business. Students complete a 42-hour business core plus an 18-hour area of concentration selected from Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, General Management, Global Management, Information Systems Management, or Marketing.

Chemistry (B.A.)

Offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Students complete a 23-hour core and then select a concentration in Environmental Chemistry, Forensics, or Fermentation Science.

Chemistry (B.S.)

Offered by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the James F. & Gerry T. Hurley School of Arts and Sciences.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Within the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, the Master of Health Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) degree program is a fully online, 60 credit hour, clinical program, allowing graduates, upon passing the National Counselor Exam (NCE), the ability to apply to the North Carolina Board of Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (NCBLCMHC) and become Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associates (LCMHCA).

Communication Studies

Offered by the Department of Communication Arts and Media. Students complete the 18-hour Communication Arts and Media core plus 24 hours in the major area.

Computer Science

Offered by the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business.

Economics and Finance

Offered by the Department of Business, Economics, and Society in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business. The major combines accounting, macro- and microeconomics, money and banking, international economics, and finance coursework with a seminar or independent study capstone.

Education: Elementary

Offered by the Department of Teacher Education in the Enoch A. & Dorothy H. Goodman School of Education. The program is approved for licensure in Elementary Education (K-6) and requires completion of the major professional course requirements along with early field experiences and student teaching.

Education: Middle School

Offered by the Department of Teacher Education and approved for licensure in Middle School (grades 6-9). The Middle School license requires a concentration in one area selected from Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies.

Education: Special Education

Offered by the Department of Teacher Education and approved for licensure in Special Education: General Curriculum (grades K-12). A double major in Elementary and Special Education is also available.

English

Offered by the Department of English. Students complete an 18-hour core and then select a concentration in Literature, Creative Writing, or Public and Professional Writing (39-40 total hours).

Entertainment Industries

Offered by the Department of Music in the Adrian L., Jr. & Dorothy L. Shuford School of Performing Arts. The major combines television/film/streaming media production, music business, and entertainment technology and design coursework.

Environment and Sustainability

Offered by the Department of Environment and Sustainability. Students complete a 20-hour core and then select a concentration in Environmental Policy and Advocacy, Environmental and Outdoor Education, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, or Sustainable Planning and Leadership.

Exercise and Nutrition Sciences

The Master of Science (MS) in Exercise & Nutrition Science degree is a 33-54 credit program for health and fitness professionals with career interests in research, sport science, exercise, and nutrition. The degree offers two areas of concentration, Sport Performance and Dietetics. Each area of concentration meets the requirements for the standard National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification.

Exercise Science

Offered by the Department of Sport and Health Sciences in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, with concentrations in Human Performance and Sports Medicine (58-60 total hours).

General Studies

Offered through Catawba Online for students who want to earn a college degree online. The major draws area electives from Humanities/Fine Arts, Mathematics/Natural Sciences, Social/Behavioral Science, and Professional/Career fields.

Healthcare Administration

A 12-credit-hour post-baccalaureate graduate certificate offering focused study in healthcare administration, consisting of graduate-level coursework in healthcare systems, ethics, financial management, and management of healthcare entities. As approved by the academic program, graduate certificate coursework is applied toward a related master's degree.

History

Offered by the Department of History in the James F. & Gerry T. Hurley School of Arts and Sciences. Students seeking secondary (grades 9-12) licensure in Comprehensive Social Studies satisfy the requirements for the B.A. in History plus the undergraduate teacher licensure requirements.

Information Systems and Technology

Offered by the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Business.

Information Technology

Offered through Catawba Online. This program is not currently admitting new students.

Mathematical Sciences

Offered by the Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences. Students complete a 29-hour core and then select a concentration in Data Analytics, Mathematical Finance, or Mathematics.

Mathematics or Science (Emphasis in STEM)

Within the Enoch A. & Dorothy H. Goodman School of Education, the Master of Education Program in Mathematics or Science (with emphasis in STEM) is designed for practicing teachers with "A" licensure in middle grades mathematics, middle grades science, secondary mathematics, or secondary comprehensive science. The program provides the practicing licensed teacher with advanced work in content along with a further development of professional knowledge and skills.

Music

Offered by the Department of Music in the Shuford School of Performing Arts, with concentrations in Music Education, Music Performance, Sacred Music, Music Business, Popular Music, and Worship Music & Production. Students who wish to major in music must audition on their major instrument before being admitted, and must demonstrate piano proficiency as a requirement of the major.

Musical Theatre

Offered by the Department of Theatre Arts in the Shuford School of Performing Arts. Admission to the B.F.A. major in Musical Theatre is by permission of the department only; guidelines and procedures for applying are published in the Theatre Arts Handbook.

Nursing (Pre-licensure)

Offered by the Department of Nursing in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Students complete Catawba general education and pre-licensure BSN general education core courses before applying to the upper division component of the nursing major, typically toward the end of the sophomore year.

Nursing (RN-BSN Completion)

This degree completion option allows licensed RNs to complete their BSN degree (RN-BSN) via theoretical and clinical experiences through Catawba Online. Graduates will have a liberal arts based education enriched with opportunities from diverse practice settings, and evidence-based competencies necessary to fulfill the service and scholarship obligations of a BSN-prepared nurse.

Recreational Therapy

The Recreational Therapy Program prepares students to be eligible for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation and licensure through the North Carolina Board of Recreational Therapy Licensure.

Sport Management

The Master of Sport Management at Catawba prepares students for life in the fast lane as they prepare for careers in motorsports, professional and collegiate sports, and the business side of sport. Within the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, the program offers a 36-hour curriculum face-to-face, student cohort model delivered over 21 months. The culminating assignment for Catawba's Sport Management graduate students will be their written thesis and oral defense.

Sustainability Leadership

A 12-credit-hour post-baccalaureate graduate certificate offering focused study in sustainability leadership, consisting of coursework in the science of sustainability, sustainability ethics, sustainability finance and risk management, and sustainability strategy and leadership. As approved by the academic program, graduate certificate coursework is applied toward a related master's degree.

Television, Film, and Streaming Media

Offered by the Department of Communication Arts and Media. Students complete the 18-hour Communication Arts and Media core plus 24 hours of production, narrative, and documentary media coursework.

Theatre Arts Administration

Theatre Arts (B.A.)

The Theatre Arts Major provides study, training, and experience in all areas of the theatre arts for careers in professional, regional, and community theatre, as well as for continued study in theatre and related professions.

Theatre Arts (B.F.A.)

Offered by the Department of Theatre Arts with concentrations in Design & Production, Directing & Devising, and Performance (58-60 total hours). Admission to the B.F.A. majors in Theatre Arts is by permission of the department only.
