This course is an introduction to the religions of the world. It is divided into three basic units: Indigenous Religions (of Africa, North America, and Oceania); Eastern Religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Jainism) and Western Religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). The emphasis is on grasping the core principles of each tradition, seeing the ways in which religion meets basic human needs, and religion as a cultural artifact that borrows, adapts, and changes over time.

This course is designed to help participants gain an in-depth understanding of world religions and to equip them with skills and resources for meaningful engagement with adherents of these religions or spiritualities. Participants gain deeper appreciation of diverse cultures and how diversity enriches all human interactions.

Discusses the founding, history, and teachings of tribal animism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and other religions. An in-depth study of major Black thinkers in America, particularly the thoughts of James Cone and Martin Luther King, Jr. will be examined. Attention will also be given to other liberation theologians, Third World theology, and other writers who address human oppression in the light of biblical teaching.

This course explores the three major religions of the world: Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and their association with war and terrorism. Emphasis will be on the radical sects of all three religions. Emphasis on current conflicts and its relationship to homeland security.

Exploration of the diverse architectural traditions of the world’s major religions with an emphasis on issues of place-making, representation, ritual, identity, and culture, past and present.

This writing intensive course explores major trends in world history following World War II and its impact, the Cold War, decolonization, and the rise and fall of the Soviet
