This course will focus on the impact of trauma on family systems and within local community contexts. Emphasis on family systems theory and community health. Specific topic areas include: displaced populations, human trafficking, justice systems, houselessness, education systems, neurodiversity, health equity and accessibility. Offered in spring.

Students focus on understanding and effectively assisting victims of traumatic affect the cognitive, affective, behavioral, and neurological functioning of an are assessed. Crisis intervention models and the pertinent legal and ethical and VCST 3350.

Development and functioning of the human stress response and self- regulation systems. Addresses bi-directional links between problem behavior and stress/trauma and strategies for promoting healthy stress response system functioning in children, individuals, and families.

The purpose of this course is to expand the graduate nursing student's knowledge of trauma, particularly sexual trauma. The focus is on examining ongoing threats to safety among individuals, communities, and witnesses to trauma. The course will facilitate students to create policy initiatives, community service activities, and to become violence prevention advocates.

This course examines a practical approach to understanding trauma and provides of various forms of abuse and trauma.

Examination of research related to the impact of trauma on child and adolescent development, including biological and psychosocial considerations. Discussion of trauma-informed interventions and practice implementing interventions, with a specific focus on Trust-Based Relational Intervention®. Students will have opportunities to reflect on their own philosophies of how trauma-informed approaches shape child-caregiver relationships and developmental understanding. For HDFE majors only.

This course provides an introduction to and overview of working with individuals and communities who have experienced trauma. Throughout this course, students will learn to recognize the presence of trauma symptoms, acknowledge the role trauma may play in an individual’s life, and learn how to provide professional trauma-informed care. In addition, students will be introduced to the use of motivational interviewing as a method of supporting and treating trauma survivors.

Introduction to Trauma Informed Child Welfare Practice will provide an overview of child welfare practices and help students understand child welfare issues and services from a professional social work perspective. The course will include the study of child welfare, its historical roots, the services provided to families and children, the problems and policy issues in the current child welfare system, and culturally competent practice.

This course examines social work practice theories and intervention approaches as they apply to practice with survivors of crisis and trauma. The course will focus on engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and follow up on all social work practice levels.

Prepares the EMS provider to assess and manage trauma patients in the pre-hospital setting.
