Introductory course in communication, emphasizing guided practice in listening, reading, and writing. Students gain proficiency in the use of library resources and in foundational computing skills. Students must write a minimum of four essays of polished prose that are revised through multiple drafts and carefully edited before submission. Students must pass this course with a grade of C- or better to advance to ECWC 102.

This is a continuation of ECWC 101 with additional practice in composition. Special emphasis is placed on learning how to apply critical thinking skills to the process of reading and incorporating sources into their documents. A major project in this course is the academic research paper.

What does it mean to write about a culture? What can we discover about our environment by talking to people and listening to their stories? How do we learn enough to express something of their essence through words on a page? This course will engage with these and other issues surrounding the act of ethnography (the writing and interpretation of people's lives and cultural practices) through a combination of theoretical and practical approaches.

This course explores the foundational skills and developmental stages of writing, emphasizes the integration of reading and writing, and engages students in authentic writing experiences. The course examines effective writing instruction practices, approaches to assessment, and the connections between language arts components while considering the diverse needs of learners.

Logistics of developing competitive mixed methods grant applications for K and R type funding mechanisms; special focus on specific aims, innovation and significance, research plan, human subject protection, project team, resources, and budget; integrating multiple methods and data sources, establishing analytical rigor, and addressing reviewer feedback.

This course is designed for current graduate students and postdoctoral scholars who are seeking to enhance their skills in writing successful grant applications. Writing Fellowships provides a comprehensive overview of the grant application process, from understanding funding agencies to developing and submitting proposals.
