URBST 120 fulfills the College Writing 2 requirement and builds on the work of English 110 (College Writing 1), in order to teach the conventions of writing in the discipline of urban studies with special attention to issues of evidence and authority. Students practice analyzing sources and constructing analyses and arguments in clear, formal academic prose. They complete the course by writing a research paper on a topic in the area of urban studies.

Students will complete at least 10 paragraphs of up to 100 words. Paragraphs will eventually include topic and supporting sentences. Students will follow the process of generating content, analyzing models, organizing content, and writing drafts with teacher, peer, and self-editing. Students will learn and practice Level 1 mechanics, grammar, sentence structure, and functional language for content area.

Students will complete at least 4 academic paragraphs of up to 120 words. Paragraphs will include topic, supporting, and concluding sentences. Students will follow the process of generating content, analyzing models, outlining, and writing 2 drafts with teacher, peer, & selfediting. Students will learn and practice mechanics, grammar, sentence structure, and functional language for paragraph genre.

Investigation and survey of various locations, media, and tools used in public writing and rhetoric. May be offered concurrently with ENGL 6120.

Practice in writing Modern Chinese. Study of the formal structure of different types of writing, based on reading and composition. Particular forms to be studied may include essays, poetry, short stories, scholarly writing, newspaper articles.

Active engagement and experience in the playful and academic practice of writing from and for multilingual realities. Specific attention on audience awareness, ethical choices, and multilingualism as lived experience.

MUSIC 122 fulfills the College Writing 2 requirement and builds on the work of English 110 (College Writing 1), in order to teach the conventions of writing in the discipline of music. The content is focused on music of the non-Western world.

In this course, students will examine theories, research, and practice in writing instruction in P-12 classrooms. Students will reflect on process and subsequently use this information for their own practice and instruction. They will also examine and develop standards, curricula, and policies at district, state, and national levels.
